There are a wide variety of Hong Kong local foods that you sometimes only hear about when taken by a friend and shown what they are. Some are intimidating on first look and some you just didn’t even know they existed.
Here, we share some of them with you:
Chicken Hot Pot – You may have tried hot pot and visited the recently popular Drunken Pot, but have you ever had chicken hot pot. You start off with a whole or half chicken that finishes cooking at your table. It’s already been seasoned with some spices and herbs. You and your party eat the chicken first, and as you near the end you put in your order for the food you would like to hot pot, just as you would for regular hot pot, then you can ask the servers to add the broth into the pot the chicken was in with spicy or regular broth. Then you go about doing regular hot pot and cook your food in the pot!
Tip: At 66 Hot Pot, we recommend the BB spice for those can only eat mild spice as it can get quite spicy.
Chinese BBQ – Have you seen the chickens, ducks, and meat hanging in the window of some shops and wasn’t sure what they all were. They are meats that you can order a-la-carte, or order as a combo with rice. Some of the options include salted chicken, soy sauce flavored chicken, roast duck, BBQ pork with its sweet glaze, and roast pork with the crispy skin on the outside. It’s a common lunch or dinner meal for local Hong Kong people. Families may even order a whole or half chicken/duck or any of the other items as one of their dishes to have for dinner at home, or they can even be found at some restaurants.
Tip: If you don’t like bones in your food, we recommend the BBQ pork. No bones and the sweetness is a good contrast to eat with the rice.
Hong Kong-style desserts – Are you looking for something different from creme brûlée, lava cakes, and tiramisu cakes? Want something with some more fruit or even a different type of sweetness? You should check out Hong Kong-style dessert shops. They are generally quite packed after 9pm any day of the week as people commonly go after dinner. You can get fruit bowls with a mix of jellies and tapioca pearls, similar to those found in Taiwanese tapioca drinks.
Tip: This is a popular local chain. If you really like sesame, we recommend the black sesame dessert. We’re also fans of the desserts with a lot of fruit!
Leung Cha – Have you walked by some shops and noticed they had bowls of black liquid set out and wondering what people are standing around drinking? These are Chinese herbal teas. They can help if you are feeling sick, already sick, feeling a sore throat, or want to calm your yin/yang (hot/coolness in your body). There are some with many herbs that may taste bitter but have a sweet aftertaste. There are others that are simple and sweet made from flowers. Some of these shops also sell fresh sugarcane juice. And have you heard about sugarcane jelly?!
