I’m an American east-coaster – a West Virginian to be precise – and I moved to Hong Kong in 2008. Determined to not be bound by the typical trappings of expattery, I slowly learned to speak Cantonese, read Chinese, and take roads less travelled. I integrated, and in the process I fell head-over-heels for this place and it’s people.

We can go absolutely anywhere in Hong Kong that interests you, but let me suggest we fuse food into the experience by dishcrawling our route. Instead of eating an entire meal in only one place, we’ll roam between restaurants – sampling best-of-breed dishes – and between food stops we’ll allow ourselves digestion time by exploring the unique attractions along the way. We’ll do it like any local would – by foot and public transportation – and Cantonese will open doors to us that would otherwise be closed. You’ll also have full control over how stomach-challenging you’d like your experience to be (from rice and noodles to fallopian tubes and sandworm jellies) and I’ll pay close attention to any allergies, aversions, or special requests you have.

You’re sure to be full by the end of our journey, but you’ll also be hungry for more, and I’ll be here whenever you’re ready to pick up where we left off.

$400HKD / hour for up to 2 people (minimum 2 hours) and $400HKD / additional set of 2 people, does not include food or other miscellaneous costs

We just had an amazing day touring Hong Kong, Kowloon and The New Territories with Gray. He was exceptionally knowledgeable, kind, intelligent and great with our kids (ages 11 and 13). We have family in Hong Kong and we are able to teach them
numerous things about the place they have lived in for 7 years now based on
what Gray showed us. Gray is not only
    knowledable about Hong Kong and
the surrounding areas but he is very
knowledgeable about food as well. He
    understands the culture. The whole
    day was orchestrated perfectly with
public transportion to get us from one
place to the next. I’m sure it can be
catered to anyone who is less mobile
then our family but we enjoyed the
    pace so much.
Gray sent us an email asking us ahead of time what our expectations were for the day and we were smart enough to turn it over to his capable ideas. We had only visited the Peak on the day
before so he avoided that in our
agenda. Our kids mentioned that they
are giving reports when they return to
school about their travels and Gray
sent an email after our visit with links of
everything we had seen for their reports!
We will absolutely recommend Sam the Local to anyone we know visiting Hong Kong and specifically mention asking for Gray!

My sister and I visited Hong Kong earlier this month and our outing with Gray was the highlight of our trip. Prior to our arrival, we had several email exchanges, so that he could learn our preferences, what we were interested in, to propose an agenda and to let us know the details of our excursion. It was pretty clear from the start that we were in good hands.

The evening of our outing, he was in the lobby promptly at our start time and we followed the proposed agenda as planned. He did a great job of introducing us to the city – we covered a lot of ground, went to places there is no way we would have discovered on our own, and ate a bunch of delicious things (that was our goal for the excursion, so mission accomplished).. We had friendly conversation along the way, he told us a lot about typical city life, and we learned a lot about the history of the city.

After we left, he followed up with a ton of information via email about where we went, other things we could see and eat during our trip, and pictures that he took along the way. Overall, it was a fantastic experience, like visiting a friend in another country who is excited to share their favorite spots with you.

Gray stepped in at the last minute as another host cancelled our tour and it was a blessing in disguise. He was amazing and he really appreciated his local knowledge. My husband and I have lived in HK for a year and he showed us some things we have never seen nor heard of before. I would highly recommend him to anyone and will be booking more tours with him in the future. Thanks again!

I did a walk with Gray in Kowloon on Christmas Eve day. The entire experience was terrific and gave me an appreciation of city that would have been impossible without the social and cultural insights that he weaves into his tour. Gary clearly loves Hong Kong and his energy and enthusiasm are infectious. Can’t wait to do it again on my next visit!

We had our tour with Gray on Xmas day. He was great from the very start once we click the submit button. He was in constant communication with us. He has deep knowledge of Hong Kong and Kowloon. He took us to great restaurants and has a deep knowledge of their history and their specialty. He showed us history and culture of Hong Kong. He was also very personable, like an old friend. I had two kids 12 & 10 with us and they were both impressed by his communication skills in both Cantonese and English. We’re Chinese Americans, so you can imagine the looks we received going around with Gray speaking Cantonese and showing us around. That was an experience in its own. I would highly recommend Gray if you want a one of a kind experience. I will definitely see him again on our next trip!

Gray really added an extra dimension to our stay in Hong Kong. Not only was he interesting and extremely knowledgable, but made us feel as if we were sightseeing with a friend rather than a guide. We did things, saw things and ate things (!) we would never have done in a hundred visits without him. He also followed up by sending photos he took and web links to points of interest we visited. A brilliant service from a first class guide. Thank you…

Fantastic experience! Gray made our group of 4 feel at ease straight away. 2 of us had been to Hong Kong many times. 2 were complete novice. Everyone was delighted with their visit. We loved the places he made us discover. We loved his fluent Cantonese. We loved using very local transportation, the links to History and the food elements too. A very generous guy, super flexible too. Highly recommended!

Gray is a friendly guy who live in HK for years. He knows HK really well.
I was very surprised that he know so much about HK’s history even more than the locals!
He can bring you to the hidden gems of the city especially in the area untouched by tourists. He speaks Cantonese fluently so you will feel really safe to follow him to the inland Kowloon where not everyone speaks English.
